Tuesday, 05/27/03; Niagara Falls, New York

What’s that bright light in the sky?

Behold! It isn’t raining when we look out the window of our motel this morning! Will it be like yesterday and rain later? We got on the road shortly after 0700 after fixing breakfast in the room.

Not long thereafter, we were on the New York Throughway buzzing along at 50 MPH, or so. Our immediate goal was Syracuse where we hoped to do some chores.

Fixing breakfast; barn by New York Throughway

By 1000, we dropped off the Throughway in Syracuse where Dennis got an “official” picture of his car! He went through the wrong tollbooth – they didn’t accept cash. When Joan went back to pay the toll, she was told that they had a picture of the car and plate and they would get a bill in the mail. We found a Laundromat and the girls began to wash over a week’s worth of dirty clothing. The guys headed out for an auto parts store to buy some 40-weight oil and to find a fast lube shop to change the oil and get the cars lubricated. We were successful, so about noon, we found a nice park and enjoyed the sun while we had a picnic lunch.

We get lubed...

We got back on the toll road heading for Niagara Falls. Later we stopped at a service center with Dennis in the lead. Dennis stopped in the parking lot to let Joan out. Keith stopped in the lane behind him to see what we were going to do. While sitting there for about 15 seconds, a lady pulled her car into the parking spot to Keith’s left rear. Unfortunately, she didn’t pull all the way in – her rear bumper was sticking out in the entry lane. Keith figured out that he should park and backed up to pull into a spot on his right. He checked the inside mirror, but failed to check to check the side mirror. Kerwham! The Smith’s car hit the parked car with the trunk! There was very little damage; however, it was a rental car so there was no possibility of negotiating the damage with the owner. After an exchange of car information, we were once again on our way to Niagara Falls.

The dent!

It wasn’t until 1730 – some 290 miles after starting our run that we arrived at our destination, but it took us some time to locate our “coupon” motel, the Ramada “within walking distance of the Falls (if you were a Green Beret in good condition!).

We are going out to dinner and then go see the falls by colored floodlights from the Canadian side. Meanwhile Joann is doing the ironing and putting the clean clothing away.

It was strange not to be driving in the rain! Just before we came to Buffalo, we did encounter a very brief, light rainstorm.

That’s it for tonight,

The “Sanforized” Four

PS: We drove over to the Canadian side of the Falls and saw them by colored floodlights. It was quite spectacular. Much different than by day and it was not crowded at all! We parked along the street and walked about a mile along the cliffs overlooking the river – seeing both sets of falls. The mist from the falls obscured the lights of the buildings on both sides of the river at times and made us wish we had put Rain-X on our glasses! It was quite cool and our jackets felt good – except for Dennis – he said he only wore his as a concession to Joann who said his not having it on made her cold. Now we can ad Canada to our growing list of places we have driven our Model A’s!
