Saturday, 05/17/03; Grandy, North Carolina - Day Six

Olson Car is Running!

Things worked out pretty well today. We completed the work on the car about 1500 and had a few hours to rest and recuperate before dinner. The day dawned cloudy and there was evidence that it had rained a little during the night. The day remained dreary with a few sprinkles. The breeze was fresh and cold by the time we completed the car. When we started to dinner, about 1730, it began to rain and the fog was starting to roll in.

Joann took the time between when the work crew returned from the garage and dinner to repack the car. In the morning, the Smiths will only have to pack their normal overnight kit to be ready to roll. Keith hopes that there will be significant rain during the night to wash off the coating of fine sand that has accumulated on the painted surface of the car.

Dennis and Joan treated Pat and Bill, our garage hosts, to a southern barbecue dinner at a new restaurant in Kitty Hawk, about 15 miles south of where we are staying. It was great for us to get to know this gracious couple better. Bill works in Virginia – about a three hour-drive from here (he is only here on the weekends) and Pat was always at work while we were here, so we saw very little of them. During dinner, we exchanged personal information and parted as old friends. It is impossible to fully describe our feelings of thanks to this wonderful couple.

This little trip was a good opportunity for Dennis to give his car a test hop. Tomorrow, before we begin our tour, Dennis will re-torque the head bolts.

Dennis give thumbs up after successful test drive.

We will turn in early tonight so as to be fresh to begin the next phase of our tour in the morning. We expect to get these last six days’ worth of epistles on the Internet tomorrow evening. Until then…
