Fun Place!

Planning is the big thing in this part of the world. This is especially true when not driving on the Interstate. Top off the gas tank and take potty breaks at the appropriate places or you may find that when you want to -- there are no facilities. This is true of motels, also. On this leg, we are positioning ourselves to arrive at Rapid City, SD to take in Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Murdo is a small town, only a couple of blocks long, but it has several motels and a couple of restaurants. It is most famous for the Pioneer Auto Show. This is a most unusual museum of autos, trucks, toys, tractors, music boxes, buildings and you name it. Keith had viewed these marvels in 1996, but the rest of the group had never been here.

We took a combination of Interstate, US and state routes to get here. In all, we drove over 250 miles in less than six hours. We could have taken the Interstates all the way, but they are indirect and would have been 90 miles further, but possibly better roads. We arrived about 1230 and checked into the Best Western motel. Then it was off to lunch. It was too cool and windy for a picnic. After lunch, we spent about three hours in the Pioneer Auto Show looking at such things as Elvis’s motorcycle, Tom Mix’s 1931 Packard convertible, a Tucker and a White motor home built in 1921. It is hard to describe all that is here, but we recommend that you stop in if you pass this way.

The weather was good to us today. Some beautiful clouds casting their shadows on the green hills. The temperature was in the mid 50’s, but the car’s interior ran about 65 degrees. The wind added to the chill factor when outside and slowed us some when it came head on. We hope that we will be so fortunate tomorrow while we visit Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore.

Regards,

The Four
