Horses, horses, horses!
We departed Marcia and Phil’s Westerville home at our usual time which disrupted the Smith household schedule with the need for an early rising and breakfast. We bad our gracious hosts goodbye with thanks for their warm welcome and a short but pleasant stay. The morning was clear, but cool – 45 degrees. We were happy for the nicer weather.
Our first goal was the Auburn, Dusenburg, and Cord Auto Museum in Auburn, Indiana. We reached Auburn at lunchtime and after a quick bite in Burger King, we were off to the museum. We toured this museum of many fine, elegant cars, plus a collection of other early cars produced in Auburn and other parts of Indiana for about 90 minutes. The museum is housed in the former corporate offices of the Auburn, Dusenburg, and Cord factory and showroom. The showroom is itself a museum piece of the art deco era. This is a must for any car buff traveling near this area. Then it was off for our night’s destination, Shipshewana, Indiana, principally an Amish community. Joan had never been in Amish country and was interested in seeing such a village and tasting Amish style food.
The Smith’s car was exhibiting strange behavior in the electrical system. The turn signals were intermittent and the CB radio garbled when the engine speed was low, suggesting a battery problem. We drove to Sturgis, Michigan to add the state of Michigan to our bag of states. While there, we visited the local Wal-Mart so Keith could check on a new battery. The old battery tested “bad,” so a new one was purchased. Unfortunately, this did not solve the two problems mentioned!
We could not find a motel room in Shipshewana, so we stayed in Sturgis and drove to Shipshweana for an Amish dinner. Joan was treated to the site of several buggies being pulled by trotting horse down the road. The parking area for horses at the Wal-Mart in Sturgis also amused us. The food was good and we had a restful night.
Regards to all from…
