Sunday, 06/01/03; Westerville, Ohio -  Day Two

Baby gets a new pair of shoes…

Today is nice and sunny, but a bit cool from the cold front we experienced yesterday. However, it warmed up quickly and was a lovely day in Ohio.

After breakfast with Marci and Phil, Dennis called Paul Griesse to tell him we are nearby and to see if he has any tires that will fit this car. Paul has tires and we make a date to stop by that afternoon. This solved the problem we had the previous day. The tires Dennis ordered from Snyder’s will be shipped to California, if we don’t need them later in the tour. Keith took Adam, another grandnephew for a ride in the Victoria and then took Katie, Adam’s mother, for a ride. Keith installed some weather-stripping in the windshield to see if he could foil the rain’s entry into the car. Dennis worked on his car and the gals cleaned the rainy road stains from both cars.

That afternoon, we drove the A’s (Phil drove his car and Marcia drove over later) to Granville, Ohio to the farm of Jill and Paul Griesse. They are magnificent hosts and while the men changed tires from Paul’s Woody Wagon to the Olson’s car, and vice versa, Jill escorted the ladies around the farm. After the dirty work was done, Paul showed Keith and Dennis around the farm and his shop and collection of cars. The cars included a half dozen (or more) Model T’s (Paul’s favorites), the Woody (his 29 Model A roadster is on the west coast awaiting shipment to Hawaii for a tour there in July), a couple of V-8’s and several other cars. The Griesses have done a marvelous job in restoring and maintaining their century old farmhouse and Jill’s gardens are wonderfully designed and maintained.

After relaxing with these friends with a drink by the pool, we mounted our cars for the short drive into Granville to an inn reputed to be the oldest continuously operated restaurant in the state of Ohio. There we were guests of the Griesses for an excellent meal. All to soon it was time to leave this hospitable couple and drive back to Westerville as night fell.

While we were in Westerville, Marcia showed us a picture of the Bicentennial Barn and later we stopped by to see one. These barns have been painted red and have the Bicentennial logo on them. One is supposed to be in each county. (If Marcia remembers, we will send a picture of a barn to be posted on the web page. We saw one as we left Ohio the next day, but circumstances did not favor a snapshot.)

Thus ended a busy and pleasant day for the intrepid travelers. We will be off on our adventure on the morrow.
