Wednesday, 04/30/04; Titusville, Florida

It’s been a busy day, friends!

We departed West Palm Beach at our normal time, but only had about 150 miles to drive to a point where we could visit the Kennedy Space Center. We selected Titusville since it was close and we had coupons for the Ramada Inn there. We checked in at the Ramada and the Olsons volunteered their room as the site of our picnic lunch.

We drove the eight or so miles to Kennedy, parked and walked into the Visitor’s Complex. It was arranged much like the Johnson Space Center. We paid enough to sponsor the next Shuttle Launch then boarded buses that gave us a good drive-by view of the Vehicle Assembly Building, a crawler transporter and then we were off to old Launch Complex-39 which has been converted into an observation gantry.

Good views of the Space Center are afforded here. Next, we boarded buses to the Apollo/Saturn Control Center for a reenactment of an Apollo/Saturn launch – very impressive! After the reenactment, we walked under one of the remaining Saturn rockets – BIG! The bus returned us to the Visitor Complex where we saw the IMAX presentation of “The Dream is Alive.” All this took all the afternoon and when we finished it looked like a thunderstorm was approaching, so we hurried to our cars and drove back to the motel. We covered our cars for the night, as we planned to walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner. It rained a bit and threatened more with a few bolts of lightning in the distance and a grumbling of thunder. Now, it looks like it will blow over, but it still could hit us later this evening. With the cover on the cars, the Smiths won’t have to worry about testing their roof repairs, yet!

Bedded down for the night

Tomorrow, we are off for Savannah, Georgia. Thus far, we are on schedule and we hope to remain so. We have an oil change due. We thought we might do it this evening, but the threat of rain dampened our enthusiasm for that. Now to see what snapshots we have captured to lend more reality to this letter.

Incidentally, we have received a few questions, some relayed by Pat Burbank. If you wish to ask questions about our journey, address them to keithontheroad@socal.rr.com.  We will answer them, if we can. Please, no jokes or chain letters to this address, as we are too busy for such things!

That’s all today from,

The Dauntless Four
