04/18/03; Minden, Louisiana
Hello Everyone!
The trip today was from Houston, Texas (NASA Johnson Space Center) to Minden, Louisiana (just east of Shreveport). This puts another new state under our belt.
Louisiana border
The first for this tour as we all had been to the states we have come through up till today in previous trips in our Model A’s. The distance was 285 miles, which we covered in 7:50. This put us in the motel early enough to find a Laundromat and do the week’s washing. The weather has been pretty favorable: humid at 69 degrees upon departure and high thin overcast; humid and 99 degrees upon arrival. The air conditioners have stayed off except for an occasional test.
Dennis was in the lead and when it came time to gas and make a “pit stop,” we were out in the country, so to speak. Dennis got a “rubber chicken” for his selection of gas stations. The ladies room door wouldn’t stay shut and needed a door guard. The men’s room was a poorly maintained “Andy Gump!”
Thus far the Smith’s odometer (which was calibrated just before departure) shows that we have covered 2330 total miles (327 are local miles, mostly generated by the tours around Kerrville). The cars continue to operate normally with some minor carburetor problems from time to time.
Regards to all,
Dennis, Keith, Joan & Joann
