04/15/03; Kerrville; Texas Day Two
Hope that you all have filed your Income Tax by now and that it wasn’t too painful! We did ours before departure and are carrying the estimated payments due in June with us.
Another cloudy, misty day as we pulled out of our motel for our tour this morning. Just out of Kerrville, we drove into a marvelous collection of antique cars. It is a museum, but is closed because the city and the owner can’t come to an equitable financial arrangement. Too bad for the town as it is simply great! Some cars are extremely rare – one concept car by Chrysler only had five others like it and one other car was a “one-off.” The collector has about 250 cars – the people at the museum didn’t know just how many he owned. There were about 30 or more cars on display with well-done dioramas of Hollywood scenes with wax figures of movie stars.
Then we were off to see another car collection at a nearby ranch. The collection was smaller, but every bit as impressive in its own way. Tomforde, the owner, had a brand new 1955 Thunderbird. He had located a new body and chassis and had the complete car built from parts as a gift for his wife. It had about 3500 miles on it! He had a replica of a Mercedes Roadster built on a Ford chassis with a Corvette engine. In all, he must have had 20 cars of various types in his garage. The ranch house was also something to behold.
From there we toured through private roads to see thousands of bluebonnets and other wild flowers covering the hills and meadows. Next, we stopped at a wildflower seed farm (that’s an oxymoron, I believe) where we had lunch and bought some seeds to enjoy next year. The clouds began to break up about this time.

After lunch, we drove to Fredericksburg and visited the Pacific War Museum which is in the hotel that was run by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz’s grandfather. This museum was extremely well done and contained much information on Admiral Nimitz and the battles of the Pacific Ocean in World War Two.
When we got to the motel time was spent getting any little kinks out of the cars before we went to dinner at a nearby resort. It has been a busy day! We drove well over 100 miles. Tomorrow, we are off to San Antonio. We hope that the weather improves.
That’s all Folks!
Joann, Joan, Keith & Dennis
