04/10/03; Day 3; El Paso, Texas

Hello All:

Another nice day on the road from Benson, Arizona to El Paso, Texas. High clouds kept the temperature in the mid 70’s after a start in Benson at 56 degrees.  The 4000-ft. plus elevation was also a factor in moderating the temperature. The wind was much more moderate and the average speed and fuel consumption figures showed this good effect.

The terrain was generally flat making our passing by the marker denoting the Continental Divide an otherwise unremarkable event! Minor car problems caused the loss of a few minutes. Again we found nice spot for a picnic lunch in the open, but the lack of bright sunshine made it quite pleasant. We stopped at the state lines to record photographically, the markers for New Mexico and Texas. Thus far, we have been in three states – 27 more to go!

Gasoline prices continued their gentle decline and averaged $1.64 per gal as opposed to $1.89 yesterday. We continue to be lucky in selecting good and inexpensive motels – under $40 per night! Our daily expenses run about $115, thus far. Of course we have only been driving and not spending any money for entertainment. That will change tomorrow when we stop at the Carlsbad Caverns.

Another frustration in trying to get on the Internet. I suspect that these less expensive motels will continue to  have a problem in this regard. As of now I have yet to solve my dialing problem. That will wait until I fine an outlet to the Internet.

We send all our best regards,

Keith, Joann, Dennis and Joan

Dennis makes a sandwich.

Running board lunch.
